BIC TIP #1324: A Listing Is Not Your Personal Space

Fresh from a real estate conference, Stephen Long, your Notorious BIC, is passing along a reminder that came straight from the North Carolina Real Estate Commission: a listing is not your personal space.

Hands Off for Personal Use

  • Do not use a vacant or occupied listing for personal reasons
  • Do not treat a client property as a place to hang out, stay, or meet up
  • If it is not your property, it is not yours to use

The Commission Takes It Seriously

This has come up at the Real Estate Commission, and licensees have been investigated and disciplined for using other people’s homes for personal purposes. Sellers trust you with access to their most valuable asset. Using that access for anything other than legitimate real estate business breaks that trust and can cost you your license.

The Practical Takeaway

Access to a property is for showing, inspecting, and serving your client. Keep every visit professional and leave the home exactly as you found it. Guard other people’s properties like your own and you will be great.

This BIC Tip is general real estate education for licensees and consumers, not legal, tax, or financial advice. Rules and forms change, so verify current NCREC rules, MLS rules, and standard forms, and consult a North Carolina attorney or qualified professional about your specific situation.
