BIC TIP #1210: Renewal Is Here! Do Not Let Your Firm Go Inactive

Finally, it is here. Stephen Long, The Notorious BIC, announces that May 15th marks the opening of the North Carolina real estate license renewal window. The Commission only allows renewal between May 15th and June 30th, so now is the time to act, and there is a big warning for firms tucked inside this tip.

Renewing Means Paying the Fee

When Stephen says renew, he means paying your renewal fee to the Real Estate Commission. This year, he notes, that fee is 50 dollars, and it is paid on the Commission’s website.

Renewal is what allows you to keep your license. Do not confuse it with continuing education. If you want to keep actively using your license, you also need to complete your 8 hours of CE. Those are two separate requirements, and you need both.

The Huge Asterisk: Firm Licenses

Here is the part Stephen underlines, stars, and puts an asterisk on: if you have a firm license, renew that too.

And there is more. If the broker-in-charge or the qualifying broker of the firm does not renew their individual license for any reason, the entire firm and every agent affiliated with it will go inactive. One missed renewal at the top can sideline an entire office.

The window closes June 30th, and July 1st is when problems show up. Renewing early means no surprises, no scrambling, and no frantic phone calls from agents who suddenly cannot practice.

Brokers-in-charge, consider checking on your qualifying broker and confirming the firm license renewal as soon as the window opens. Agents, it does not hurt to ask your BIC whether the firm is taken care of.
