BIC TIP #1106: Two Things Every Agent Should Know

Watch Stephen Long explain the vernacular of real estate

Every profession has its pet peeves, and real estate is no different. Today’s tip is a friendly reminder about two common language mistakes that are easy to fix and worth correcting.

First, there are only two syllables in REALTOR®. It is pronounced REAL-tor, not “real-a-tor” or “ree-uh-tor.” Using the correct pronunciation is a simple way to sound professional and consistent with industry standards.

Second, when referring to more than one addendum, the correct term is addenda, not “addendums.” The word addendum follows Latin pluralization, and while “addendums” may be heard in casual conversation, addenda is the proper usage in professional real estate practice.

These details may seem small, but clear communication and professionalism matter. Language reflects competence, and paying attention to these basics reinforces credibility with clients, attorneys, lenders, and fellow agents alike.

Sometimes it is the little things that set professionals apart.
