BIC Tip #1049: The 18-Month Countdown for Provisional Brokers

One of the most important reminders I share with new agents — and their Brokers-in-Charge — is the strict timeline attached to provisional status. In North Carolina, Provisional Brokers (PBs) have just 18 months from the date their license is issued to complete all three post-licensing courses.
Miss that deadline? Your license automatically goes inactive. And when you’re inactive, you’re on the sidelines:
- ❌ No deals
- ❌ No closings
- ❌ No commissions
For new agents, that can be a career-stopping mistake.
As a BIC — whether you’re managing one PB or an entire team — it’s your responsibility to keep this on their radar. Encourage them to knock out those post-licensing courses early. Don’t let procrastination put their business (and yours) at risk.
The best strategy? Create a timeline the day they receive their license, register them for courses in advance, and check in regularly to ensure they’re on track.
Remember: 18 months goes by faster than you think. Protect your PBs’ momentum and your office productivity by making education deadlines a top priority.
